How to Learn Pillars of Islam? (2024)

by Abru Farzeen

Did you know that over 1.8 billion people worldwide follow Islam? Discovering that this religion is built upon five fundamental principles, known as the Five Pillars is fascinating. These pillars, namely the Shahadah, the Salah, the Zakat, the Sawm, and the Hajj, are not just rituals but the very essence of a Muslim’s faith and practice. Understanding these pillars is crucial for anyone seeking a comprehensive understanding of Islam or Muslims aiming to strengthen their faith.

The five pillars of Islam are mandatory for all faithful followers of the Prophet Muhammad, male and female, Sunni and Shi’a. However, this does not mean that all Muslims follow them regularly. As in all faiths, the circumstances change, and specific individuals are more dedicated than others. Age, stage of life, employment, family obligations, health, and money all have a role.

Five Pillars of Islam

The following are the five pillars of Islam:

1. Shahadah

The cornerstone of the Islamic religion is centered on the Shahadah, a confession of faith. The Shahadah is a simple statement that goes as follows:

"La ilaha illa Allah, wa Muhammadan rasul Allah"

This sentence involves two key points: “I testify that there is no other god but Allah, and also I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah.”

The Shahadah, which affirms the unity of Allah and the prophecy of Muhammad (P.B.U.H), is a significant declaration in a Muslim’s life. It is the first step towards embracing Islam and a powerful testament to their devotion to Allah alone.

2. Salah (The Prayer)

Salah is the core element of Islam and the main door that keeps Allah and Muslims engaged. Muslims offer Salah five times a day and pray at five specific points.

  • Fajr (dawn)
  • Dhuhr (noon)
  • Asr (afternoon)
  • Maghrib (sunset)
  • Isha (night)

Salah, the core element of Islam, is not just a prayer but a profound act of purification and supplication to the Almighty. It is a constant testament to a Muslim’s devotion to Allah, providing peace and meditation in a world that often rushes by.

3. Zakat

Zakat is a mandatory act of charity in Islam that requires Muslims to donate a specific percentage of their wealth to the needy. It promotes financial purification and fosters community and responsibility towards the less fortunate.

4. Sawm (The Fast of Ramadan)

During Ramadan, Muslims observe Sawm, a fast from dawn to dusk. They abstain from food, drink, and worldly pleasures and focus on prayer, Quran recitation, and acts of charity. The fast allows them to empathize with those less fortunate and avoid distractions.

5. Hajj (The Pilgrimage to Mecca)

Hajj is a once-in-a-lifetime obligation for all Muslims. They travel to Mecca and participate in rituals commemorating Prophet Abraham (peace be upon him) and his family. Hajj unites Muslims from all walks of life in their faith and submission to Allah, reminding them of the importance of sacrifice and striving for Allah’s pleasure.

How to Learn the Pillars of Islam?

The Five Pillars of Islam are not just rules but a lifelong process that leads to personal growth and spiritual development. It requires learning and practicing, which takes time and effort. However, don’t panic; there are numerous ways to explore and comprehend these basic principles, each step bringing you closer to a deeper understanding of your faith and a stronger connection with Allah.

  • You may begin with reading Islamic books or articles available online and in libraries.
  • You can also choose online courses, as they deeply deal with the Five Pillars and other Islamic teachings.
  • In addition, if you are searching for deeper knowledge, connecting with a nearby mosque or an Islamic center can open doors for you to the educational programs and scholars of the religion you can get help from.

Understanding the philosophy behind these practices will help you memorize the information and guide you on the path to enlightenment with the support and guidance of your community.

Appreciating and implementing the Five Pillars reflects one’s spiritual enlargement and societal obligations and a deep sense of unity and community. The profession of faith (shahada), prayer (salah), almsgiving (zakat), fasting (sawm), and pilgrimage (hajj).

They provide an unbroken passage for Muslims from all walks of life and with different cultural heritages, binding them together in their faith. Engage in the learning process entirely with enthusiasm and passion for your faith, and the Five Pillars can be a compass for the duration of your journey in life, connecting you to a global community of believers.
